Just seems odd to be prompted to comment by something like this BUT:
Wow! Look at that cover! That's the cover that was on the paperback of "Beyond the Farthest Star", a book made up of a couple of 1940-41 stories by Burroughs. I wonder why they put it on this novel, for which there was a nifty cover from the same paperback period.
I like this and the other books in the trilogy (Which are all short enough to be published as a single book)... Of course I encountered them when I was kid and the first two are full of DINOSAURS! The third has one of those niftily detailed lost civilizations Burroughs occasionally came up with. I mean, he came up with a lot but occasionally he seems to have put in a bit more effort.thingmakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14011048675050396438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5124461767763964919.post-49580668631266183562013-05-28T13:48:39.764+01:002013-05-28T13:48:39.764+01:00Susie,

Very much appreciated.

You raise a point that has been raised by other reviewers - why not do something about the faulty equipment. Firstly there was the financial aspect - the budget was tiny, just enough for food and fees. There was nothing to fall back on. A decent lightweight tent was beyond reach.

Secondly, it's difficult to describe just how desolate parts of central France are - it can be 50 miles or more to even a small town, where there's no opportunity to buy anything more than a baguette and lump of cheese. Certainly no sophisticated hiking products, in fact no hiking products at all. And walking 50 miles out of your way is a long way on foot!

It would have been nice to do it as others have - with a back-up vehicle, but I didn't have that luxury. And I didn't know anybody who would have been obliging enough to drive several hundred miles to refuel or re-equip me. More's the pity. I'd have been calling them every other day. :)

Thanks once again.

Best wishes

SusieSusieKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03839407308263118784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5124461767763964919.post-50795425406763897972013-05-24T16:27:09.599+01:002013-05-24T16:27:09.599+01:00Nice review! I appreciate the fair and candid appraisal. :)

FTR, I think of "paranormal" stories as subtle variations on reality. When well done, they should feel like they could really happen. Like maybe it's not fiction at all, but it had to be shelved under fiction because who would believe it? Ghost and psychics are things people in the real world believe in. There are countless books and documentaries about these topics -- not in fiction, but in real life.

Fantasy requires suspension of disbelief. A good author convinces you to do this because you want to do it, because it's a good story and it's fun. I call my novel "fantasy" because the magic is in your face, and not at all subtle.

There is gray area. Most vampire stories these days are too absurd for the paranormal label, IMO, but the original monsters (Bram Stoker) were more subtle denizens of the underworld. (I have a lot of respect for his version of vampirism, which was why I roughly used his view in my book.)

Good question! I would think it would be very difficult to provide tension in a story that someone already knew, but on the other hand, that happens when people re-read books, too.

If you like Alan Dean Foster, have you ever read his very first novel The Tar-Aiym Krang? Before he got into novelizing movies, he had a couple of good series going. This is the first in the Pip and Flinx series. Partly I was concerned about making him too perfect, but mostly I was going for the theme that by accepting even figurehead status, he created a debt to the people that meant he couldn't always have what he wanted. It felt like he learned more from slipping and then trying to atone than from never giving way to his own desires.

Thanks again for the thoughtful review!Carmen Webster Buxtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08516485172937482027noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5124461767763964919.post-11512832441770009882013-03-23T13:51:36.958+00:002013-03-23T13:51:36.958+00:00The dystopian section should be easy - there's...The dystopian section should be easy - there's so many to choose from and I think there's still quite a few out there you haven't touched.

I have an idea about the Memoir and of course Made into a movie... well tell you once I've checked on them.Lakaranoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5124461767763964919.post-77279252679636920422013-03-22T20:02:20.028+00:002013-03-22T20:02:20.028+00:00If you really want to give romantic suspense anoth...If you really want to give romantic suspense another try, I suggest trying the non-Arthurian novels of Mary Stewart (old but still in print). If you're looking for another one, my favorite Shardlake was DARK FIRE, which I lied for its information on ancient warfare and its ability to weave so many different story lines together.

I know what you mean about language. If it were truly Tudor English, it would be very difficult to read, so I prefer it when the author goes for a sort of neutral, slightly more formal-speak, rather than trying to replicate the period. But no modern idioms! "I'm OK with that" does not belong in historical novels. Luckily, Sansom never does that.
